T'was a time when everybody believed that if you went to college or uni you'd have a job for life with all the 'benefits'...........fastforward to now when those with degrees can be on the dole with the lot who did not go to uni or college scrambling along..........oh yes time..........you are a lucky one to have such a dad as well, collecting stones by the beach is a heavenly passtime I'd say, thanks for the story t'was nice to be slung back in time, cheers mate, Grüß Gott.
Even better - it was FREE, in fact, I got paid to the PhD. Roll forward to my eldest son and I had to take out a second mortgage to put i=him through an undergraduate program.... I tell my daughter that college is an extravagance unless she wants to be a lawyer or something where you truly need the degree. These days, better to go get a job if you can or even better - start a business.
Thanks for the insights, I'd add learn as many real life skills / craftmanships as possible, real work for real life with real life experiences with real human beings around and a dog or two if possible. So not only living in the head and working with the head or as we all do now with tech having outsourced our own brain it seems, but with the whole body grounded in oneself if possible, as a drop in the ocean fully immersed knowing to be part of the ocean, I wish you a lovely day, Grüß Gott.
The 80s were a different time, in large part due to the fact a very different scientific culture existed; one where people had the freedom to explore unorthodox ideas and those that worked had a real chance to take off.
Congratulations! I’m so happy you got a replacement! Such an important part of your life.
