I will confess that I have one weird passion … despite being crap at any form of sport and not really interested in it either, I have supported my home town soccer team for decades.
There's nowt wrong with footie. I have been to a game at Hull against Chelsea, my brother's team. Both my lads follow Ipswich Town and the eldest lad went to all home and away games last season. It's their tribe. I take a passing interest in it in so much as a conversational bullwork. I myself cannot sit through a game with all the opinionated BS and woke shite that accompanies it.
I will however look at 3 minute highlights from the Wycombe Wanderers, Ipswich, Leeds and Chelsea games. Our Dad used to take us to Chelsea back in the 70s and I have followed WW since their Isthmian league days, selling programs at the games as a 12 year old.
A mate from Yorkshire came to see a Chelsea V Leeds game a few years back over the Christmas period and the Leeds fans were brilliant, you could have watched them for 90 minutes.
Great stuff, I’m a Man City fan back in the days when we were shit. Being an Aussie with loads of English mates who were Liverpool, Arsenal or United, I decided to stir the pot and walked into our 6-a-side game with my blue Man City top, boy did I cop a right royal ribbing from my mates for decades… not now of course 😏
I’m a Bolton wanderers fan for my sins and been abroad many years too. It’s great when they do well ... especially for two northern towns there that have a lot of socio economic deprivation. Our roots are our roots and footie is one of the last place based cultural connections that are still alive.
What wonderful memories! Thank you for sharing them.
