Password Hell

I’m a bit late today but… I’m already going five thousand miles an hour and making very little progress. Too many things going on!

I just rented a garage for the new car. It’s nearby. The firm renting it to me do everything using an app. So, I need yet another password to add to the list of 6000 passwords I am supposed to create and remember at will. But before I do that they send me a PIN. I don’t get that email so - utter confusion….

But this is today’s point… passwords.

I remember when it was enough to remember my name, phone number and address. Perhaps even my social security number. These days, everything has a bloody password. To be effective, each password needs to be different or else one security breach somewhere and your password is freely available. So enter the secondary check. I resisted this everywhere until forced into it. It’s hard enough dealing with passwords without also having to get a code on my phone, scan my face of finger etc. just to get entry to what is supposed to be mine.

I even bought a license to a single password vault. It does the hard work for you and creates random passwords and keeps them. It automatically adds my login details so I do not have to have them in memory. Awesome!

Except, recently, that application suddenly made me change that password and use a new one instead. Disaster, I couldn’t recall the password plainly and - there is no way in without it.

So, all my fancy random passwords for around 100 different sites and services now all lost….

However, I was fortunate as I did manage after hours of experiment, curses and wailings - I refound the password.

I hate passwords.

I hate the era of passwords.

I hate how the password has to be a set of different characters meaning it is not memorable and how you cannot use a single password that you might recall across multiple site.

This, folks, is the modern convenient world - my Arse!

Bring back the pre-digital days please…. on balance, it was better.
